The Gallery Project is a collaboration between the Tory Folliard Gallery and local art colleges which aims to provide art students with an insider's look into the art business. The Gallery Project debuted in April 2006 and alternates between MIAD and UW-Milwaukee each spring.
Boris Ostrerov, a senior painting major at Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (MIAD) was awarded the opportunity to exhibit and sell his work in the Gallery from March 14-29, 2008.
Ostrerov's paintings are an investigation of physics, gravity, and the physicality of painting. His images result from pouring ink onto precisely planned installations of paper the artist calls "paper-sculptures." Once the ink is applied the artist may shake, roll or toss the paper to achieve the desired effect, allowing unexpected outcomes to balance out his calculated approach. The result is a set of stark, sophisticated paintings that are at once highly conceptual and strikingly elegant. Ostrerov's work is a refreshing tribute to the beauty of the natural world, rendered abstract by the laws that determine it.
